Microsoft has released an un-scheduled security update that's been given a very serious-sounding "Critical" rating.

The update, as described on Microsoft's Security TechCenter, aims to address a vulnerability found in nearly every version of Windows still being supported - including Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and the preview build of Windows 10.

The "vulnerability" in question is related to the Windows Adobe Type Manager Library and how it deals with OpenType fonts. Users that open a specially made document, or visit a suspicious webpage full of embedded OpenType fonts will unknowingly subject their system to a security risk.

Anyone with the technical know how and desire to exploit this particular flaw in the OS could "take complete control of the affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights."

Chances are, you're using one of the aforementioned versions of Windows right now. In which case, it's probably best to install the fix as soon as possible - unless you like to live life dangerously. Those using Windows 10 shouldn't have to worry about getting the update, though, as updates for Windows 10 are automatic and mandatory anyway.
